What's New for the Spirit Analyst's Notebook?
The MER Analyst's Notebook continues to be updated with additional features and bug fixes. These updates are detailed on this page to provide a reference to keep the user informed. Known problems are listed in the errata section until they are corrected.

2008-05-12 The MER Project has discontinued the Radio Science experiment because the small amount of data that could be recovered had little science value. No more Radio Science data will be released.

 The Microscopic Imager Merged Focal Sections and Anaglyph Stereo Images web page is being updated. Updates should be complete within the next few weeks.  The label for Spirit Pancam EDR sol 1101 product 2P224101142ETHASG0P2629L6C1.IMG has a value for the keyword INSTRUMENT_TEMPERATURE that is below the minimum value of -273.0, and has values for the keywords AZIMUTH_FOV and ELEVATION_FOV that are above the maximum value of 360.0.

2007-10-26 Data Updated All Spirit Mössbauer Summed Spectra data from sols 991 through 1080 have been re-released with release 14. The previous version of the ESE files had a problem in which decimal points were converted to commas in error, which made the files appear to have more columns than they should have. This problem has been corrected.

 An error in the value for the label keyword PRODUCT_CREATION_TIME occurs in some PDS labels for Microscopic Imager and Pancam products in release 13 and previous releases. The value should be in the form yyyy-mm-ddThh:mm:ss, but where the day of the month is 1 through 9 only a single digit is present.

2007-07-31 Data Updated Several Spirit data products prior to sol 627 have been re-released with release 13. Reprocessing occurred for one of the following reasons: 1. the telemetry data products were transmitted late and had not yet been processed or delivered to PDS; 2. the data products failed to be processed the first time around; or 3. the data products were processed, but were of the incorrect data type (e.g. EFF vs. EDN). Please see release13-pre13data.txt for a list of the reprocessed data products.

 A minor systematic error occurs in the PDS labels of APXS, Mössbauer, and RAT data products in release 11. The value for the keyword TLM_INST_DATA_HEADER_ID is not a valid ASCII character. The value should be 3.

 As of release 11, 11 Microscopic Imager full frame images from Sol 886 were still on the rover waiting for downlink. When these images become available, they will be added to the notebook.

2006-02-03 Comments and errata for Mini-TES data have been provided by the instrument team and are available from the PDS archive errata file.
2006-02-03 Starting on sol 461, the MER-A (Spirit) Mössbauer counter configuration was changed to accumulate 14.4 keV data only. A detailed explanation of this change is in preparation and will be added to the data set shortly. The change applies only to the Mössbauer instrument on MER-A.
2006-01-04 New MER Publications. Elemental abundances derived from APXS observations from the Spirit rover through sol 470 are now online in this paper: Gellert, R., et al. (2006), Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS): Results from Gusev crater and calibration report, J. Geophys. 2005-07-29 Release 5 contains new Mini-TES raw and derived data products for sols 271 through 360 for both rovers, and revised versions of all previously released products for sols 1 through 270 for both rovers. The revisions are due to additional improvements in the calibration software. For details, see the file errata.txt in the Mini-TES archive.
2005-07-29 With Release 5 of the Moessbauer archives, the Calibrated Spectra Data Set (MER2-M-MB-5-CALSPEC-SCI-V1.0) is no longer being delivered. The ESE products that were part of this data set are now archived with the Summed Spectra Data Set (MER2-M-MB-4-SUMSPEC-SCI-V1.0). The other two product types from the Calibrated Spectra Data Set, MGV and MXV products, are no longer being produced. They were basically the same as the Summed Spectra MGC and MXC products with a velocity column added. These product types have become obsolete because the velocity scale does not take accurately into account the change of the Moessbauer drive characteristics, which exhibit a small temperature dependence. Instead, separate velocity files have been included with the Moessbauer archives since Release 3 which take the temperature dependence into account. This change has been applied to the current release and to previous releases of these data sets.

2005-04-22 Release 4 contains new Mini-TES raw and derived data products for sols 181 through 270 for both rovers, and revised versions of all previously released products for sols 1 through 180 for both rovers. The revisions are due to improvements in the calibration software. For details, see the file errata.txt in the Mini-TES archive.
2005-04-22 An error in the the Mini-TES geometric projection software has been identified which could result in errors in the current PDS Mini-TES Locator Frame images. This error only affects the Locator Frames where the image and the Mini-TES qube were acquired at different positions, those products acquired at the same position are unafftected. The magnitude of the error will vary depending on the offset between the two positions. This error is in the process of being fixed and all affected Mini-TES Locator Frame images will be corrected and re-released to the PDS as soon as possible. The PDS community will be notified via the MER PDS website when the corrected products are available.

2005-03-02 For release 3 of the MER Moessbauer archives there are velocity calibration files for surface measurements and the CCT in the CALIB directory. These files consist of 13 columns: one per each temperature window. Columns 1, 2, and 12 are empty because the instruments never reached those temperatures on Mars. The last temperature window contains a room temperature extrapolation of the velocity scale. That is the velocity scale currently provided with the MGV files. Refer to the errata portion of the Moessbauer Data Set Documentation.
2005-03-02 In releases 1 and 2 of the MER archives there was an issue with the calibration data for the APXS instruments on both rovers. The APXS calibration data were swapped for the two rovers with the files for Spirit located with the Opportunity data set and vice-versa. The error resulted from the sensor heads being unintentionally swapped shortly before launch during a very late refurbishment of both instruments. There are data that indicate conclusively that the instrument swap occurred. The calibration data are still valid, but were associated with the wrong spacecraft. The issue has been corrected for release 3 of the archives. Refer to the errata portion of the APXS Data Set Documentation.

2004-08-01 Mac users have difficulty accessing some parts of the Notebook when using Opera, Safari, or Microsoft IE web browsers. Suggest that Netscape Navigator be used instead.
