The Apollo 11 astronauts conducted science operations during a single 2 hr 40 min extravehicular activity (EVA). The crew collected a Contingency Sample, deployed the Solar Wind Composition Experiment, collected a Bulk Sample, deployed the Early Apollo Scientific Experiments Package (EASEP), collected Documented Samples, and performed panoramic and close-up Stereoscopic photography. The EASEP consisted of a Passive Seismic experiment, a Laser Ranging Retroreflector, and a Lunar Dust Detector. The Contingency sample was collected as a first priority and consisted of lunar surface material that was immediately stored on the spacecraft to ensure that if an early end to surface activities were required, samples from the Moon would be returned to Earth. The Bulk sample consisted of 22 or 23 scoops that were taken and sealed in one of the sample return containers. The Documented samples consisted of special samples whose collection was documented with photographs and astronaut commentary prior to being removed from the lunar surface. The documented sample also consisted of two drive core samples. Due to time constraints not all samples were documented to the planned extent.
