Data set documents in the Notebook are collected from the archive volumes and bundles. They are designed to promote understanding of the mission, spacecraft, instruments, and data formats.

Data set document categories

Missions that were selected prior to 2011 initially archived using the older PDS3 standards. The documents for these older missions are grouped into categories shown below, even when that mission's archive have been updated to PDS4 standards.

  • Archive documentation describes the archive volume layout and format.
  • Calibration files detail the data calibration process.
  • Catalog files provide information about the instrument, spacecraft, and mission.
  • Documents contains detailed information needed to understand and use the science data in the archive.
  • Label files is the a collection of format files common to the data set. (May not exist for all data sets.)

The most useful documents

Science users beginning work on a data set should refer to two documents:

  • ERRATA.TXT - Errors in the data and metadata are described in this file. This file exists for each data set (may be more than one data set per instrument).
  • Software Interface Specification (SIS) - Contains technical information about the instrument and data product formats.

notes

  • There is at least one data product SIS for each instrument.
  • Do not confuse the data product SIS with the archive volume SIS.

Where to find data set documents

The data set documents can be found in the Notebook under the Resources tab. In addition, you can select Data set documents from the Help drop down in the detail page toolbar.
