Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Spirit Basemap - 25cm/pixel The basemap represents a small portion of Gusev Crater from the Spirit Lander position to Home Plate, south of Husband Hill. This basemap is a section clipped from the HiRISE orthoimage, PSP_001777_1650_RED_A_01_ORTHO.JP2 (NASA/JPL/University of Arizona/USGS), which is available for download at http://www.uahirise.org/PDS/DTM/PSP/ORB_001500_001599/PSP_001513_1655_PSP_001777_1650/PSP_001777_1650_RED_A_01_ORTHO.JP2. An orthoimage is an orthorectified data without topographic distortions. This means at each pixel it is projected as if you are looking directly down at the terrain. First, a HiRISE DTM was made from HiRISE stereo pairs covering this region by the HiRISE team. The DTM was registered to the MOLA global elevation map. Once the DTM was generated, orthoimages could be made of the source stereo pair for the DTM. Orthoimage PSP_001777_1650_RED_A_01_ORTHO.JP2 was chosen and clipped as a basemap for the Spirit Rover Landing site.
