Science vs. Operations Data Categories

Previous  Next

Data products for some instruments are divided into two categories, with two intended purposes.

1.The Operations Products Generation Subsystem (OPGS) products are generated to support mission operations-- produced in time to support planning on a daily basis. These OPGS products are released as a package to provide the user with a sol by sol archive to show what products were used in operations. This package is also expected to be of interest to researchers interested in machine vision and engineering operations. The products are not intended for radiometric or photometric analyses of camera data.

2.Science products are produced to be used by the community interested in radiometric and photometric analyses. Further, it is expected that additional products will be generated from these data and released to the community to support detailed analyses, including mosaics and terrain elevation maps.

For some instruments, products were designed to capture all information needed for scientific analyses of the observations. Thus, separate science versions are not included in the archives.

Science and operations products may be distinguished by means of the product ID. The next to last character in the product ID indicates the data producer. All operations products are produced by the JPL Multimission Image Processing Lab and carry the letter "M" for the data producer. Science data are produced by the University of Arizona, the MECA OM Team, Texas A&M, and Other "X".

The table below shows the abbreviations for science and operations data producers:
